Japan Crate April 2015 Premium Box Review

Japan Crate is a monthly subscription box service that sends a box full of Japanese candy, DIY kits and drink. The box that I'll review is the premium box, sent to me by Japan Crate to review, which includes a box filled with 2 pounds of wild and crazy full sized Japanese candies including 2 DIY kits and 1 premium Japanese drink.

Japan Crate offers three different boxes to choose from with a base price of $12.00 for the mini, $25.00 for the original and $30.00 for the premium. They ship worldwide and free shipping anywhere in the United States.

When you first open the box, a comic/item description card is on the top. The comic strip is really cute, funny, and nicely drawn. The other side shows an image and description for each item in the box. One mistake I noticed is that on the bottom the of the card, it says March 2015 when it actually is the April box.

Kami Bikkuriman Wafer

It's basically a cocoa wafer bar. The initial taste for each bite has an egg taste, probably because there's whole egg in the ingredient, but it goes away in a second. Other than that, the wafer's taste has a subtle cocoa taste and it seems like the bar would be great to eat with coffee or tea in the morning.

Kantorimaamu (Country Ma'am) Crispy

The Kantorimaamu Crispy is a tasty cookie snack. It doesn't taste like it has oats and granola but it does have a slight earthly taste from the oats and granola, probably because I was imagining an oatmeal raisin cookie. The cookie also tasted like the cookie part of an Oreo.

Glico Kapuriko

I actually don't like strawberry flavored things so my review of this might be different compared to others. It would've been nice to get vanilla but I tried it anyways. Surprisingly, I actually liked it. The snack is shaped like an ice cream cone and is composed of wafers. The strawberry actually had the taste of strawberries and not an artificial taste.

Hi-Chew Minis

These Hi-Chew Minis come in four flavors; apple, grape, lemon and strawberry. On the item description card, it says pineapple when it's actually lemon and the picture on the card is a bit different from what came in the box. The candy is almost the same as Skittle in a sense that there's a crunchy shell and a chewy center. The tastes for each flavor are great except for the strawberry, based on my preference.

Konpeito

I never tried this particular candy, but it's basically pure sugar in a bite size. I remember seeing these in Spirited Away but I actually didn't know what it was. It's really sweet and colorful but its unflavored, the colors do not indicate a flavor. I heard you can use it as a sweetener for coffee or tea, so I'm going to try that out later.

POWER SQUASH

This drink is an energy drink. I actually never drank energy drinks because I know that they are unhealthy. Since this box was sent for review, I took a sip and then drained out the rest (I feel bad for wasting the whole thing but I don't drink energy drinks). This drink has the taste of Ramune or a bubblegum flavor.

Koume Chan Plum

This is a heart shaped gummy that is sweet and sour ume with a yuzu jelly center. Ume is a sour plum while yuzu is a citrus fruit. This is actually very yummy, when you chew into it, you get a hint of zest from the yuzu and it's quite delicious.

NeruNeru Ichigo DIY

This is a build your own chocolate covered strawberry wafer sticks. I'm going to try this DIY kit later (luckily, I haven't tried this one so it should be fun.)

Animal Pancake DIY

This is a do it yourself strawberry cake kit. It's basically a instant animal pancake. I'm also going to try this DIY kit later (luckily, again, I haven't tried this one so it should be fun.)

Meiji White Chocolate

A delicious white chocolate bar and since I'm a fan of white chocolate, I enjoyed it. It's sweet and melts in your mouth. It's nothing special compared to other brands such as Lindt and Ghirardelli.

Fujiya Fruit Drops

Fujiya Fruit Drops are hard candies that come in grape, lemon, pineapple, and strawberry. The flavor is not that strong but subtle. This candy does take a while to finish since it is hard candy but other than that, they're quite enjoyable.

On Shokora Houjun

I think this was my first time trying chocolate like this. This is basically chocolate with strawberries and raspberries sprinkled on the top and it's very delicious. The chocolate kind of tastes like dark chocolate, probably because there's cocoa mass in the ingredients, but it's not that strong of a cocoa taste.

Overall, all the snacks in this box were fun to taste and review. I would recommend this box to anyone who wants to try a verity of Japanese snacks whether they have an Asian supermarket near them or not. My only problem is that this box was entirely sweet with no savory snacks. Other than that, this is one of the best Japanese snack subscription services.
