Snakku November 2015 Review

Snakku is a fairly new subscription box service, with this being their fourth box. Snakku is a US based Japanese Snack box that is different compared to other snack boxes. They work directly with the local snack makers in Japan to bring unique, delicious snacks that are only sold in Japan.

There is only one sized box and there are three plans to choose from: one month, three months and six months. The box comes with 10 - 15 expertly curated Japanese snacks and the cost is $38.95 per month. They ship within the U.S. for free as well as a few other countries for a fee. For more information, check out their page.

The Snakku box is wrapped nicely with a pretty cloth.  If you upgrade to a 3 or 6 month subscription, you will get a free Traditional Japanese Furoshiki Wrapping Cloth. When you first open the box, you will find a beautiful two sided information card that tells you all about the snacks in the box. You also get a nice personalized note. This box is Tokyo Boutique themed.

Tokyo Banana
I've heard of this before this box but never bought it because it was so expensive on Amazon even though in Japan it was much cheaper. I was super excited to see this. It's basically a banana shaped sponge cake that is made from real banana. This one is filled with banana maple custard. It was so good and not overly sweet. Definitely one of my favorite thing in this box.

Nidoage Mochi
These are double grilled soy glazed mochi crackers. These are good rice crackers. Crunchy but not too crunchy. And lightly brushed with soy sauce. I'm not much of a rice cracker fan but these were good enough.

Kinesha
These are seasonal folded butter biscuits. The plain flavor was delicious, it's similar to the Danish cookies, nice and buttery. The maple flavor was delicious too, not overly sweet, tasted like maple syrup. The chocolate flavor was good, tasted similar to hot cocoa.

Seasonal Meiji Horn
Delicate biscuit sandwich made with Japanese purple yam. I enjoyed this snack a lot. It tasted like white chocolate in-between biscuits with the flavor of purple yam. Another great snack in this box. Since its seasonal, it's probably not available year round.

Mukashi no Senbei
Old school rice crackers grilled in a clay fire kiln. Like I said before, I'm not much of a senbei fan so I didn't enjoy this that much. It was okay but it's definitely not something I would go out and buy.

Mame Yakko
This is a unique cracker that is made from a mixture of edamame beans and rice. The edamame flavor was nice and light, great with tea. The spicy dashi broth was light as well, tasted a lot like ginger. The roasted kinoko soybean was my favorite, the flavor is light with a slight taste of mushroom.

Double Anzutsumi
These are two kinds of stuffed mochi cakes (sweet potato and red bean). This was very light and would go great with tea. The sweet potato cake tasted a bit like applesauce but the red bean one didn't have much flavor.

Tokyo Banana Pie
A very delicate biscuit made by Tokyo Banana. It uses banana and is slowly baked to achieve a light finish. The first thing I thought of when I ate this was palmier, a French pastry. It's nice and buttery with a light hint of banana. One of my favorite snacks in this box.

Sweet Sake Soft Candy
Mellow candy made with real rice sake. This doesn't have any alcohol content, so it was okay to eat. The flavor is quite light and has the texture of a tootsie roll. It taste like the Hokkaido milk candy with an added flavor of sake.

October Box Items

Northern Sable Eggs
Mellow grilled cookies made with free range eggs from Hokkaido. These were nice and light with a slight egg taste. Similar to the blue tin Danish cookies.

Shiroi Koibito
Simple cookies that have white chocolate between butter biscuit. These are amazing. The quality of the chocolate is great and the butter biscuit makes the cookie complete. My favorite snack in this box from the October side.

Yakitoukibi
This is a snack that you can only get from the famous Sapporo Ohdori Park. It's made from locally grown rice and sweet corn. It's a bit salty but has a sweet corn flavor. It’s glazed with soy sauce.

I love Snakku, the packaging is nice and beautiful. Also, the snacks they put in are of the highest quality. Overall, all the snacks in this box were fun to taste and review. I would recommend this box to anyone who wants more than just a novelty snack box. You definitely will be trying snacks you have never tasted before. So my favorite snacks in this box are the Tokyo banana and pie, the Kinesha, the sweet sake soft candy and the Shiroi Koibito.

If $38.95 is a bit too much for you, Snakku has launched a new box called the Tasting Box. It's $15.75, it will come with 5-7 curated snacks and currently ships only to the US.
